Variety is proud to introduce a community project that will benefit children with cognitive and physical disabilities and memorialize past board member, Ashley Okland. The Ashley Okland Star Playground will be an all-inclusive playground located within Ewing Park on the southeast side of Des Moines.
The playground, the first of its kind for our Des Moines community, will cater to special-needs kids by featuring adapted playground equipment; however, it will be built to encourage play among children of all abilities, breaking down barriers and fostering friendships. Ashley was a person who energetically enjoyed living life to its fullest and was happiest when others were doing the same; the Star Playground will allow her spirit and energy to live on through the children who play there.
Below is a tentative drawing of the playground.
Variety’s $500,000 fundraising campaign for the Ashley Okland Star Playground launches TODAY, with the goal of supervising a community build spring 2014. Playground sponsorships are available. We have a ways to go in our effort. The Wellmark Foundation has also generously committed to match up to $50,000 by December 15, 2013. Please stand next to us as we bring this project to life.
Monetary and in-kind donations are needed for:
• Grading, drainage and subsurface infrastructure
• Concrete paving
• Sensory play equipment
